Greiner's career f*cking the lungs of the world?
Mood:  blue
Topic: nsw govt

Nick Greiner posing on the board of Bradken Pty Ltd along with a colleague Gregory Laurie still on the board of Big River Timbers Pty Ltd. Refer the link on the pic.

Ironic headline front of the Corporate Cartoon Book aka Sydney Daily Telegraph today?

Greiner hounded out of politics for a slick attempted deal to entice indy MP Metherell off the cross benchers in 1991-2 to be head of the EPA. Blocked by senior public servant and upright Neil Shepherd who wouldn't step aside. Minister Tim Moore and Premier Greiner both investigated by ICAC and reversed on appeal, but the damage done.

Not well known that Metherell went indy, after difficult tenure as Education Minister, to block Greiner destroying NSW wilderness areas under the then bipartisan 1987 Wilderness Act.

The damage done too in Greiner's career of wrecking the world's lungs and atmosphere as his party refused to have him back in a sensitively balanced parliament.

Associated way back with Big River Timbers in the old growth forest destruction game. Another reason Metherell rejected him. Note the professional association still to this day in the picture above.

Then Chairman of British American Tobacco criticised by academic Prof Chapman at Sydney Uni. Refer AAP story copied here

Deeply involved in escalating the burning of coal via higher exports from Port of Newcastle.

Mr Fixit? Only if you don't want to breathe, or don't give a fig about the atmosphere, in a NSW Govt that rejects a carbon tax.

Oh dear.

Forest crucified and saved in South East NSW
Mood:  lyrical
Topic: ecology

[under construction]

A big thank you to Tony and Lisa and South East Forest Rescue supporters for a fab 3 days at Badja Fest next to the magic talking creek, and the awesome and sad tour of logging compartment, pic to follow. Good to meet Trevor also.  Even Cooma seemed nicer than I remember. The frolic in the twobie 3/4 up (!) Big Badja was nervy, retreating with tail between legs. The side trip to the Tuross River (?) Cascades was super, as was the rush down to Nalbaugh SF on Monday night and Tues, omitted from the Coolangubra Wilderness complex of the SEF National Park.

The report for the latter is: Despite a day of tramping, discovery of what I think was the missing Koala Fire Trail from 1:25K topographic map, on the north side of compt 1402 (renamed south end of "Waratah Rd" now?) and approaches from south side of 1402 from Mines Rd , it appears the historical blockade site in 1992 has gone, gone, gone.

A pity. It was my initiation in 1992 into the green movement with a clan called "Green Gliders" - amalgam of Canberra and Sydney folks.
One of those Matt from Sydney WAG committed suicide 10 years ago due to mental health issues, but he helped save the forest nearby in SEF NP from my view.
Others still kicking as far as I know are Fatty Thompson, Jarrah Keenan, Rich Gregory, his mate the vet (first name) Cameron, Zac, the two OShannaseys.

In what I think was 1402 off Mines Rd to the north, I did find a 10m girth big boy E fastigata brown barrel in the logged area, with pic to follow. Also 4 creek crossings with erosion guards and blue metal rocks. There is a story of pollution breach in there methinks. The south side of Mines Rd is a monument to vandalism and defacto plantation establishment.

On the north side of 1402 from KFT aka 'Waratah'  I got more pictures of big boys 11m and 8m girth and walk in hollows on living 400 yr + beauties. The forest here is intact and gorgeous and tonic to the soul. Not a bad day now I am back in city concrete.
Thanks SEFR for getting me out there again. I haven't forgotten the NRMA thing.

I was talking
I was talking to myself
Somebody else
Talk, talk, talking
I couldn't hear a word
A word you said
He was my brother, brother
I said there was no other
Way out of here
Be my brother, brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out

I was walking

I was walking into walls
I'm back again
I just keep walking
I walk into a window
To see myself
And my reflection
When I thought about it
My direction
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

No one, no one is blinder

Than he who will not see
No one, no one is blinder
Than me

I was talking

I was talking in my sleep
I can't stop talk, talk, talking
I'm talking to you
It's up to you

Be my brother, brother

There is another way out of here
In my brother, brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out

World Council of Churches support BDS?
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: aust govt

"4.2.6 Palestinian civil organizations, as well as international organizations, NGOs and certain religious institutions call on individuals, companies and states to engage in divestment and in an economic and commercial boycott of everything produced by the occupation. We understand this to integrate the logic of peaceful resistance. These advocacy campaigns must be carried out with courage, openly sincerely proclaiming that their object is not revenge but rather to put an end to the existing evil, liberating both the perpetrators and the victims of injustice. The aim is to free both peoples from extremist positions of the different Israeli governments, bringing both to justice and reconciliation. In this spirit and with this dedication we will eventually reach the longed-for resolution to our problems, as indeed happened in South Africa and with many other liberation movements in the world."

Big media and big politics fall in with Yigal Amir's bupkis fascist mates
Mood:  don't ask
Topic: aust govt

Foreign minister Rudd want's to save 1 million people in Benghazi from Gaddafi's military predations, but he and many others are happy to see 1.5M people in Gaza rot away in poverty, in an open air prison, picked off a few at a time by a predatory Israeli government. Not dying in a fire fight, but slowly over years, in arguably a much crueler fashion.

So much for the Bonhoeffer thing from Kevin Rudd.

It's a sobering lesson of local Sydney Jewish politics to recall that when Yigal Amir as an Israeli 'settler' assassinated peacemaker prime minister Yitzak Rabin in 1995, that there was no real condemnation of Yigal Amir of significance from the local worthies. Because half of Israel were glad of the murder apparently and it nearly tore the country in half. At that moment I would say Israeli democracy died.

Indeed the predatory settler cheer squad are stronger than ever now holding crucial numbers in the present fascist Israeli Government, powered up with 100-200 nuclear weapons according to estimates of the Federation of American Scientists. This cheer squad also hold the numbers in their own local institutions in Sydney and seem to have strong ties with the other institutions of Australian society. But it doesn't make it right. It just makes it morally worse.

Keep in mind what this cheer squad for the 'settler' land thieves are barracking for. The settler movement generally believe the only good Arab is a dead one. That's why they have Yigal Amir as a poster boy - because he killed the PM of Israel who was going to make friends with the Arabs over Palestine.

If one looks closely at the diaspora here in Sydney it becomes clear that these folks are in a paranoid and neurotic loop about their tragic history. If one steps back it becomes apparent they can't accept peace, because they have been fighting seemingly forever. It's become their comfort zone. If the Palestinian conflict didn't exist, for many of these folks it would have to be invented. They are suffering a collective post traumatic stress disorder. So unlike say the Irish who have had a 150 years to come to terms with 1.5M dead in a 'guided' famine courtesy of the British, the Jewish diaspora are acting out their family bereavements in Palestine, nursing it along with all the misery they can get away with hiding behind the narrative of the victim country surviving the Holocaust and existential angst.

Existential angst while harbouring 100-200 nuclear weapons while North Korea with barely a handful has stood against the whole world for years. That's not existential risk, that's self pity over WW2 foisted on the politics of the whole world.

So that's who Big Media and Big Politics are getting in bed with on the Marrickville council controversy. The cheer squad for Yigal Amir who have no interest in peace, embrace cruelty and prejudice as they live out their post Holocaust right wing fantasies. This would be bad enough until you add in the nuclear arms race dimension that could take the whole world down in a nuclear winter in which case this cancer becomes totally intolerable.

So yes I support a boycott, divestment and sanction campaign against Israel until it changes it policy on human rights in Palestine by showing it can squash the predatory settlers. And I will until the Israeli Govt policy changes for the better, whether jelly backs in the Greens stand fast or not , or it damages my career, or Marrickville Council is sacked, or until the settlers set off a nuclear weapon fueled war, in which case my last words will be "I wish I was wrong".

Uh oh, Greens vote goes up in Marrickville via News Corp bully rag?
Mood:  cool
Topic: peace

Harriet Swift.

Greens candidate in the seat of Bega who polled 12.5% of the vote, highest on record for that seat and above the NSW average for Greens in lower house seats apparently.

Subject of front page attacks for weeks in the Eden Magnet and Bega District News.

So what distinguished Harriet as a local candidate? Her staunch opposition in and outside the courts to the Eden chipmill owned by our Japanese industrial friends.

There's a lesson there for the Greens in Marrickville campaigning against the ALP minister for asbestos, Carmel Tebbutt.

Also amusing to note federal MP's worried about hacking of their email. Mutterings about foreign interests like China. Or would that be News International? Or Israel?

Finally, who knew that Holden supports the Israeli right catspaw, predatory 'settler' land theft movement in Palestine? Or a host of other companies? Maybe these companies might want to reconsider getting into bed with the assassin of Israeli PM Rabin, a vile criminal by the name of Yigal Amir. Yigal is the poster boy of the settlers, currently serving a  long stretch in an Israeli gaol despite a campaign for his release.

Who indeed knew that Israeli murderers are allowed to marry in gaol and beget a son for the settler predatory movement? Mmm. That's a real witches brew of right wing politics The Australian is associating itself with.

But morals was never News Corp's strong suit.

Imre getting into bed, so to speak, with Carmel, raising questions of bias?
Mood:  accident prone
Topic: big media

A state political reporter is supposed to talk to state MPs. So Imre Salusinszky chatting to "Carmel" late last week is no big deal.

But one wonders, based on our telephone conversation late last week with Imre, working for the Holt St Harlot, given a factual error by Imre in a report that day in The Australian about Lee Rhiannon, also his focus again today.

He took a second call during the conversation, muffled sounds, then dulcet tones of "thankyou Carmel .... [rustle rustle]" as presumably his hand went over the telephone hand piece.

It doesn't take a genius to know he is being fed by Carmel Tebbutt MP for Marrickville at risk of the Greens Party in that seat.

And the factual error in the piece? Ben Oquist sought preselection for the upper house of the Greens and was beaten in a competitive process, not blocked by Rhiannon per se, as argued by Imre.

My mail at the time some years back was that despite Ben being an excellent pollicy and back room guy working for Senator Bob Brown (and I know with media degree from UTS because he beat me for the state campaigner job at The Wilderness Society to leave after 2 months or so in 1993), he did not perform very well in the public speaking events in front of the Green branches statewide. This comment was made by Dietrich Willing a long time campaigner for Friends of the Earth, Sydney at that time around 2002 at a meeting of the Inner West Greens - then based around Concord.

Whether this is fair to Ben is another question again.

Given the article in today's The Australian by Imre, it is pretty clear he is desperate to distract the audience from the dissembling by the Israel lobby in bed with assassin Yigal Amir murderer of PM Rabin. Far better to promote a narrative of dissembling by The Green, admittedy with a grain of truth in it too, like all politicians.

I put it to Imre in a "personal" conversation - his word, that The Australian lacks credibility until they report financing of the predatory 'settler' movement, catspaw for a right wing Israeli government, from diaspora business interests in Australia, and report the cheer squad for assassin Yigal Amir.

Imre's reply was stuck on Yasser Arafat failing to provide a partner for peace which is like - pretty old history in a fast moving diplomatic momentum to recognise Palestine in a unilateral declaration of statehood in 2011, virtually endorsed by the IMF recently as economically viable. He also noted people here can donate to anyone they like.

Our view remains not if it's a breach of Australian law to promote terrorism, including 'settler' terrorism, quite apart from the immorality of a theocratic blank cheque for expansionist nuclear armed Israel.

Henderson's right wing paranoia about 'red' Rhiannon under the bed
Mood:  lyrical
Topic: aust govt

I first met Lee Rhiannon in the group house at 24 Beach Rd (I think that was the number) in 1992. A group house of 11 rooms on two levels (take note Victor Dominello MP - not an asian face amongst us).

It was a vegetarian, greenie, hippie house and it ran very well. An elder in the place was a guy called Geoff Ash. Geoff was dating Lee who was a bit older than Geoff and divorced.

Some of us worked for established green groups - myself at The Wilderness Society. Geoff worked for an organic vegetable distribution business based at Tamarama. Geof was committed to building a nascent NSW Greens party. It was an idea without flesh. An aspiration without form. Hopeful but a bit pie in the sky. Geoff was a refugee from the local Australian Labor Party, from memory.

If memory serves his time was mostly taken up with fighting off a rat bag called Joe Thorn, originally from NZ, and from the local ALP who wanted to own the nascent Green brand. Even from those early years the ALP were afraid of the potential of the Green idea. Much like Herrod in the New Testament wanted to kill every new born baby - just in case.

There was nothing about Lee's famous communist history on show during those several years at Beach Rd, or later nearby Curlewis St bedsitter, or the Eastern Suburbs Greens meetings I attended to 2000, 4 as a local councillor. I met her aged frail mother once but again there was no comments about communism or smashing the system and revolution. A milder bunch of people would be hard to find in East Sydney let alone Australia.

So Rhiannon's love story with Geoff Ash is the real basis of her ascension in the Greens. It's nothing to do with her communist parents.

Henderson, with his deliberately covert corporate funding for his Sydney Institute - undeclared in his letter to the The Australian today - is pushing his ideological aggression against Rhiannon. But it's misconceived. Much the same as the newspaper runs a dirt sheet on Gandhi, same edition. Charming I'm sure.

Sure Rhiannon has political organising skills learned at the teat of her political parents. Sure she was a student lefty. And signifying what?

This writer used to be an alter boy until 14, and then had sex outside of marriage as an adult. Proving what?  That people grow and change - derr.

Henderson makes no mention Rhiannon also did a botany degree. But what he misses most profoundly is the love story with Geoff Ash,  a genuine founder of the NSW Greens who comes originally from the mainstream ALP tradition. In other words Henderson is a flake, and may well be indulging in some professional misogyny as well given he has never been elected to anything in his life.

Geoff Ash is the story that Henderson and most of the big media have no clue about when it comes to the political provenance of Lee Rhiannon. And at heart it is a great love story.

How PM Menzies nearly sabotaged the Petrov defection, first hand account
Mood:  sharp
Topic: big media

The Corporate media are so biased to their political heroes - like long serving Prime Minister Robert Menzies - it is virtually axiomatic.

Today Menzies features prominently in The Australian's coverage of the old saw of the Petrov spy defection 60 years ago (!).

Talk about old fish wrapping.

If The Australian's research was any good they would quote from the first hand account of the spy who actually turned Petrov. Not haughty Colonel Spry head of then ASO. The actual spy who spoke Russian. The author, doctor and musician Michael Bialoguski, assisted in his account of the affair by the grandfather of this blogger at the time in 1955 (Sydney Morning Herald's Eric McLoughlin).

Some quotes regarding the incompetence of both Spry and Menzies by Bialoguski in The Petrov Story, (1955, publisher Mandarin Australia) at p137

"When I parked my car at Parliament House on this second call, I found myself within twenty yards of a Soviet Embassy car, just as the Ambassador, Lifanov, emerged from it. He was on his way, I discovered later, to pay his official farewell visit to the Prime Minister before his departure from Australia. All the time I sat in Yeend's office I could hear Lifanov's voice as he talked to Mr Menzies in the adjoining suite."

In this way the incompetent Menzies and his staff almost blew the cover of Bialoguski who was a regular at the Russian embassy functions with Petrov and other functionaries and a trusted member of the Russian speaking diaspora in Sydney. Suffice to say Bialoguski was disgusted his dangerous work and his life was treated with such contempt. No wonder he wrote a book about it.

And this again at p140, referring to a messenger for Spry taking petty revenge on Bialoguski for going over his head to Menzies about the penny pinching and ham fisted support he was getting in his work of turning Petrov. Note Bialoguski's work, not Spry's. The quote:

" "He wished me to tell you that your services with the Department have been terminated and that you are to cease your activities forthwith. He also asked me to tell you that he is in charge of Security - not the Prime Minister."... [at p141] ...The fact that Colonel Spry could, with seeming casualness, say to me "get out", was in my opinion an admission that he had no clear idea of the complexities of the situation.

By using some ingenuity, I could have gradually extricated myself no doubt, but the more thought I gave the matter, the more certain I became that my contact with Petrov and the Soviet Embassy should be continued. Personal pride entered into the situation to some extent, but there was also the overwhelming conviction that in the national interest it was necessary to succeed with the plan I had in mind.

Something of what I felt ... is reflected in the following letter:

To the Director General, Secuirty ..."

Suffice to say Bialoguski remained on the Petrov case, and his motives may well have been more than pride (refer below) and he left for the UK after the Royal Commission.

At page 200:

"I was sincere when I spoke in these terms to Petrov. A new role had been thrust upon me, that, as it were, of Petrov's advocate, in the sense of counsel representing a client. In Petrov's mind I was the only person on whom he could depend. My duty, as I saw it now, was not only to see that Petrov defected, but also to see that he got a satisfactory chance to start his life anew."

In other words Menzies and Spry came within a whisker of sabotaging a defining moment in their own political and professional careers due to their arrogance and incompetence in relation to matters of intelligence. They almost blew the cover of the spy who turned Petrov because they had no sense of his key role.

So much for the heroes of the cold war lauded by The Australian newspaper today in a clumsy attempt to drag an ALP figure through the mud. This first hand account makes the cold war 'heroes' look like clods and fools.

And why was Bialoguski so committed to his infiltration of the embassy and turning Petrov? Refer page 10:

"I dislike fanaticism of any kind. This is why I'm ready to fight Communism, Fascism or any other totalitarianism built on fanaticism. ... in western democracies ... one great right remains - the right to raise one's voice in protest without fear of a bullet in the back."

and page 12 of his young adult life in Vilna, Lithuania in 1940:

"The number and frequency of arrests grew, and many of those arrested were never seen again. Fear began to creep into daily life. Every one began to wonder who would be next on the list of the NKVD (the secret police, now the MVD).

... It did not greatly surprise me, therefore, when one autumn night the dreaded knock came on my door, and I was taken to the headquarters of the NKVD.

I was seated facing the wall ... the "softening" process lasted several hours. ...[13] ...I knew, however, that this experience was the first, and possibly the last warning of things to come, and I made up my mind to waste no time in getting away from the Soviet occupation."

And particularly note the profound motivation for chameleon Bialoguski by deduction from this at page 56:

"The last few months of 1949 were a bad time for me personally.

I received a letter that my mother was dead. She had died with none of her family around her .... my father... was unable to be with us ...and he died sometime before her in a concentration camp.

My brother Stafan, too, had gone. ... he had escaped the German occupation and was in the Middle East. ... Now I knew that if ever my activities were revealed, there was no need to fear reprisals."

ALP's slur via Danby MP is hopelessly flawed and sleazy
Mood:  sharp
Topic: aust govt

Danby MP lays out his sophistry in today's The Australian with this:

"I have never heard any of them speak out in support of the many thousands of political prisoners in North Korean labour camps, of the 300,000 murdered African Muslims of Darfur, or the Uighur people in western China, whose ancient heritage in areas like Kashgar is being bulldozed by the Chinese Communists as I write. Perhaps the common attribute of these struggles which does not endear them to Rhiannon and her watermelon faction is that they do not support violence and they are not anti-American."

in MICHAEL DANBY: Knowing the truth will scare off voters

Certainly Danby and the ALP must be worried being bracketed with the Yigal Amir poster boy movement that assassinated Israeli PM Yitzak Rabin to expand into Palestine.

It's all about alarm for the corrupt in Israeli politics over this;

For instance he completely ignores that the ALP councillors at Marrickville also voted for Boycott, Sanction, Divestment campaign against Israel until they change direction on Palestine human rights and the extreme and predatory land theft movement promoting theocratic 'Samaria'.

He also selectively ignores the record of Meredith Burgmann, a prominent campaigner for the ALP in Balmain state election seat, former MP, current Sydney City Councillor, who managed to airbrush the North Koreans atrocities from her cute report of visit to the secret kingdom, exposed here on SAM some years back;
