Big Media, indy blogosphere bump and grind
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: independent media

We recently wrote to the ABC Media Report about this interesting by play in the life of the daily slogger/micro news blogger:

You may know I edit a micro news blog service with about 12K readers per month e.g. this one:

http://www.sydneyalternativemedia.com/blog/index.blog/1778142/tim-blair-damaging-the-news-ltdsydney-daily-telegraph-brand/

The significance is that I never get many comments as its too clunky for public interaction. (I want more to get in the head of the Big Media, not impress punters as such). The Sydney Indymedia are much better at this aspect [offset by open slather editorial approach] there.

My reason for the background is, on the string above no less than 9 comments which is unprecedented. Meaning Tim Blair has his right wing (extremist?) cheer squad either in or out of NewsLimited who patrol their champion's 'reputation' in typical aggressive style.

Till recently Simon Benson at the Tele added me to his unsolicited email list for his blog URL to stump up some decent/friendly comments. This appears to be a job metric there now at News Ltd? No. of comments = popular, effective journo?

Certainly my piece on Blair was potentially damaging to his  career, and his neocon mates seemed to know it. Especially the bit about Fairfax scoop in Rupert's home town.

To me these are interesting blog based power dynamics of the Big Media/Blogosphere ie Fourth/Fifth estate.

Dude! Was your mother scared by a grammar book? Did you sleep all the way through primary school? This stuff is internet litter, roadkill on the information superhighway. And for crying out loud, do yourself a favor: DELETE YOUR TELEPHONE NUMBER!

Thursday, 10 January 2008 - 12:22 PM EADT

Name: "Trish"

I have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about.

Thursday, 10 January 2008 - 12:26 PM EADT

Name: "RebeccaH"

Here's your problem:  your font is jammed together.  You don't seem to be able to write two coherent sentences in a row.  Nine comments are "unprecedented" to you.

There's a lot of blog advice out there.  You should probably seek some.

Oh shut up, paco. xxxxxxx You're way too much an arse-licker, the arse belonging to Tim Tam, of course.

I can assure you, Tim's "right wing (?) extremist cheer squad" has FAR more than 9 people.  And some of them are pretty good looking, as well!

I'd say that your software is as clunky as your spelling, grammar, and rhetorical skills.  And that's terrifying in this computer age.

Thursday, 10 January 2008 - 12:37 PM EADT

Name: "1.618"

And you too, RebeccaH and all the other Blairites. You have to attack just because your master gave you the unspoken permission. If you weren't so blind and attached to him, you wouldn't even be here.

Seriously, you're all fucking idiots, salivating over Tim Tam and waiting for him to hand you your next victim like a pack of rabid dogs.

 No wonder you're all considered a big joke by many people who outnumber you all.

 ~~~waves~~~ Now, I'm going to have a drink of a stuffed polar bear.
Oh, brother! The fake 1.618, again. Another lefty (dumbass?) who can defend this incoherent mess and then have the gall to refer to Tim's commenters as "idiots". Step aside, twinkles, we're giving this guy site traffic, ain't we?
Do you honestly think that the "no less than 9 comments" is evidence of an aggressive right wing patrol of Tim Blair's reputation? Honestly? I've read the 9 comments. A few point out that the material Tim used (referred to in the original post) was on the public record, a few express views on David Hicks, and a few express views on the quality of writing on this site. I think you're overreacting.
 You certainly are bringing traffic to this site, Paco. At this rate I anticipate another missive to ABC Media Report.
 @"Bruce": Did you mean "Must post comment", or did you mean "Most commented upon post"?
Nothing like self inflicted damage done to your career, namely lack of talent and profile.
I was looking for a coherent sentence amongst the randomly selected bundle of words you have published above.  Unfortunately, I could not find one.  Until I got to the first sentence of Mr Paco's comments entry - 'Dude!'.
Please tell me you only do this stuff as a side line.  It's not, God forbid, your real job?
Hey, great post and very informative.  Typical of conservatives to wage war o/s in the name of 'Western values' such as the 'Rule of Law' and yet do their best to undermine it at home.
Are you serious? How are 9 people commenting on a blog undermining the rule of law?
Not even Australia's most paranoid lawyer (Tom McLoughlin phone +61 410 558 838 just in case MI5 is wondering) believes that.
Anonymous (2.50pm): I just assumed that Ghostie was one of the right wing attack dogs taking the piss (or was commenting on a different thread & got mixed up). Otherwise the comment makes no sense whatsoever.
I don't understand what you're trying to say. As far as I have it figured, you reckon you've uncovered something potentially damaging to Blair's career (from your link though, I can't see what though).
I don't know how new you are to journalism (I have 20 years), but as a columnist Blair operates to different newsworthiness qualifications to general news reporters.
Inspiration from a completely different news source than the one who employs him is entirely legitimate. The punchline to his column to which you take offence has been in the public domain for more than a year.
This is the mistake I see time and again in journalism students I have tutored over the years. They cannot tell the difference between objective fact-based reporting (as should be found on the general newspages) and editorialising which is opinion based.
As op-editor and columnist Blair is well within his purview to use any fact or quote that backs up his point.
Every journalist wants to be read - even you - and in this day and age of instant feedback why shouldn't a journalist's success be measured by the amount of interest his or her piece generates in comments?
Back in the day a crusty old deputy editor told me that if people didn't respond - especially negatively - to something I had written, then I had failed to do my job properly.
Perhaps it's time someone told you the truth about journalism, particularly print media. Here it is: journalism has nothing to do with 'the truth'. It's all about telling a 'good' story.
If the unvarnished facts and a 'good' story happen to coincide, then this is a happy coincidence.
Truth 2: News is manufactured for public consumption by working journalists, former journalists working for the 'dark side' in a PR capacity, bloggers who are open about their biases and even by 'alternative media' activitists like yourself who claim 'independence and trustworthiness'.
You state that 'big media' engages in spin. You do exactly the same thing. Prove your trustworthiness.
Truth 3: The Internet is big enough for all of us with news consumers having a voice and a choice for the first time in journalistic history. The public will need exercise commonsense and their grey matter to decide for themselves, on the balance of probability and/or preponderous of immutable fact, who is right in a particular point of view.
Until you can appreciate these truths your claim of 'trustiworthiness' is suspect and your 'independence' carrying the legitimacy of a gossip column.
There seems to be more than 9, but what would I, a member of Julia's electorate know.
Oh, that's right, I was one of the 4.4% that voted for what really matters.
I don't care what these rabid right wingers say, I think you should keep speaking truth to power... or to your loyal three readers.
But be careful, under the news.corp totalitarian state, their eyes are everywhere. I've wrapped my computer and my head in tinfoil to hide from their surveillance. I suggest you do the same as well as isolating these comments from the rest of your blog with a poultice of lentils and hemp in case they include bugging devices. The black helicopters are everywhere (just ask Tony Kevin).
It is? How so?
MI5? I doubt it, this would be a little out of their jurisdiction...although maybe they're linked into that instrument of 'democracy' promotion, the Echelon Project as well? ASIO might. Of course I guess I'll never know, perhaps you could tell me?
I do find the diction of the post slightly disturbing - sounds a bit like a paranoid schizophrenic talking so perhaps the commenters shouldn't laugh too much at the author...
You might not get Tim's job, but I'm sure the editor will forward your application to The Age with a recommendation that you take over from Traceeeeeeeeeeeeeee. That's "Traceeeeeeeeeeeeee" with 42 Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's.
Oh Hal, its okay...you don't need to be ashamed to admit that you know that TB's (s)administrator, Andrea, manages to defeat any non-KKKonservative who somehow manages to excercise their right to free speech (you know, the one we are supposedly fighting for against the Islamist hordes) on Tim B'liar's blog by banning them. It's okay, you're a right-winger, you're allowed to oppose freedom of speech. So hey , go ahead and give us more Rightard spam...
I've heard that Andrea uses exotic code to track copy-paste functions and erase the HDD of anyone who simply copies Tim B. Liar's posts to their own blog with the intent of exercising their right to critical free speech.
Okay, I'll bite, Ghostie. How does putting a member of al-Qaeda - caught in a foreign country, fighting our troops, in the middle of a war - in a POW camp consistute breaking down the rule of law? I'm sorry - The Rule of Law? If they had killed him in battle, it would have been totally legitimate. How does capturing him after he lost a battle suddenly a violation of all rightness?  To answer a couple of the old post's points:
1. "Getting in trouble abroad" is losing your passport, not fighting with the enemy and dreaming about killing Joos. That's a different department.
2. You don't "adopt" POWs like a mile of highway. You capture them in battle and then pick their brains for useful intelligence. And the OSS did it with Nazis. Shocker! Because what we should really do is restock their arms and let them go or 60 years later a different agency could be accused of adopting their tactics.
And, more importantly, what does it have to do with *this* post?
